Spring Garden Tips

Odd Shaped Fruit

The apples on my tree grow in funny shapes and are not nearly as perfect as the ones you see at a grocery. Are there any tricks to growing great apples right in a backyard?.

Apple maggots, codling moths, other insects and diseases can cause unsightly fruit. A thorough clean up of fallen fruit, leaves and brush will help reduce pest problems. Some home gardeners use round red balls covered with a sticky substance to trap insects. Others find these are not enough to control the pest but rather a good tool for monitoring insect populations so they only spray when needed. Always read and follow the label directions carefully if you decide to use a pesticide. Make sure it is labeled for use on apples and the pest you are trying to control. You may decide it is easier to consider your lumpy apples as pesticide-free fruit with character.
