Fertilizing Perennials

When should I fertilize my perennials?

Recent research found that perennials grown in properly prepared soil need little additional fertilizer.  Spread a one to two inch layer of compost over the soil surface every other year to take care of most perennial needs. Supplement this with about two pounds per 100 square feet of a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer in spring if needed.  A second application can be made in summer.   Use organic mulches such as shredded leaves, evergreen needles or twice shredded bark to suppress weeds and further improve the soil.  If plants are not responding well, have your soil tested.  The results will tell you exactly what type and how much additional fertilizer to add.  Click here to visit the United States Department of Agriculture website to find your local Extension Service for soil test information.
